The Parish of Buckland Newton

Church of the Holy Rood	Buckland Newton (sometimes referred to as Buckland Abbas) is a rural parish and extensive village in north central Dorset, England. It is approximately 9 miles south-east of Sherborne, and 10 miles north of Dorchester, It was formerly in the division and union of Cerne but now is in North Dorset Local Authority. Buckland Newton is bordered, clockwise from the north, by the parishes of Pulham, Mappowder, Alton Pancras, Cerne Abbas, Minterne Magna and Glanvilles Wootton. The Chapelry of Plush is detached from the Parish of Buckland Newton, and is bordered by the parishes of Mappowder, Melcombe Bingham, Cheselbourne, Piddletrenthide and Alton Pancras. The village of Buckland is situated at the head of the vale of Blackmoor, and commands some fine and extensive woodland scenery. The church of the Holy Rood is a Gothic structure, with embattled tower, 5 bells, and a short lead-covered spire. The population in 1851, was 990 in the parish, and 408 in the township; acreage 6,018. A market was formerly held here and a court leet was held annually.
Plush is a tithing and chapelry, 3 miles south-east, with a small church (St John the Baptist, registers date from 1848). The population in 1851 was 145. Plush also has an Elementary School. Minterne Parva is a tithing, 2 miles south-west, population 121. Duntish is a tithing, 1 mile north, with a population of 133. Near it are Castle Hill and Lawrences. Brockhampton and Knowle Farm, a tithing 2 miles north-east, population 183, nearby are Chaston, Sharnell (or Sharnhill) Green and Beaulieu Wood. Rue (or Rew) is 1 mile north-east; Henley, 1 south-east; Revels 1 west.	School
