May 1892 (approx - when Aunt Bess was 18 months): moved from Dorset to Isle of Wight. They must have moved sometime after 6 Apr 1891 and before 26 May 1893 (when Charles was born). Should be able to be more precise by looking at school records for Buckland Newton (don't seem to exist) and/or Shorwell (where Frederick & Elizabeth certainly attended before going to Chillerton). Its also possible of course that they went somewhere else first.
1893: Shepherd of Shorwell (Rushcombe Farm according to IW County Press).
23 Feb 1895: Gatcombe parish council received application from Mr C Downton of Chillerton to lease 1 acre pasturage from Mr Seely, M.P. (Reported in the IW County Press)

DEATH OF MR C DOWNTON - Many residents in the district [Carisbrooke) will learn with regret of the death at Rowridge Farm on Thursday week, of Mr Charles Downton. Deceased, who was 77 years of age, had been ill for about five years. He had been at Rowridge for nearly 14 years as the tenant of Sir John Simeon, Bt., and he was very well known in the surrounding countryside, especially as a shepherd. Mr Downton originally came from Dorset, and had also been at Rushcombe Farm, Shorwell, and Downers, Chale, before taking Rowridge. He was a member of the Oddfellows in Dorset. Much sympathy is felt with his widow and family in their sad loss. The funeral took place at Carisbrooke Cemetery on Saturday, and was conducted by Mr A James, T.C., of Gunville. The mourners were Mr and Mrs J Downton, of Chale, and Mr and Mrs G Downton (sons and daughters-in-law), Messrs C., L. and T Downton (sons), the Misses Rhoda and Ruth Downton (daughters), Mr and Mrs G Harley [sic, should be Hardy] (son-in-law and daughter),. Mr I W Pitman, of Newport, and Mr F F Hollis, C.C. Mrs Downton was unable to be present. There were several choice floral tributes. Mr A A Westmore, of Blackwater, carried out the arrangements.
