- December 25 (Xmas Day) 1883, at the Parish Church in the Parish of Badsey, Worcester, Entry No 157
Joseph Keen (23, Bachelor, Gardener of Lower Slaughter, Gloucestershire), Father Valentine Keen (Decd), Gamekeeper to Mary Anne (sic) Walker (Age 23, Spinster, Domestic Servant of Badsey), Father John Walker, Labourer. In the presence of George Geden and Sarah Elizabeth Geden (Sarah was sister of Mary Ann, George was her husband).
Note: Joseph cited his grandfather as his father. This presumably means his mother had died before his marriage or at least that he did not know who she was. Valentine was also not officially a gamekeeper (he does not appear in the Gamekeeper records at Gloucester Record Office).
Note: The Marriage Certificate is a copy of entry 157 in the Marriage Register Books made by William Carmont Allsehook of Badsey Vicarage on 1 May 1914.

| Notes |
- Unable to find details of Joseph's father. Have not managed to discover birth record in ONS.
May 25, 1860: Stow on the Wold Baptism Record 933, Joseph Keen, son of Mary Ann Keen, in the Workhouse of the Parish of Lower Slaughter. Baptised by J O Hill, Chaplain of the Workhouse.
1861 Census: Lower Slaughter, Age 10m, Grandson, Stow. Living with Grandparents and Mother.
After the 1861 census, Joseph's mother, Mary Ann, left Lower Slaughter (probably sent away), and in 1862 gave birth again to Harry Valentine Keen in Stourbridge.
1864: Joseph was enrolled in Lower Slaughter school in October 1864 (pupil 13), having previously attended Bourton on the Water school (if this is Joseph V Keen he would only have been at B/W for a year). Parent/guardian is listed as Thomas Castle, of Lower Slaughter. Date of birth not included in School Register.
1871 Census: Lower Slaughter
Thos Castle Head Mar 61 Stone Mason Donnington
Amelia Castle Wife Mar 59 Slaughter
Jos Keen Nephew 11 Scholar Stow
31 Jan 1873: Left Lower Slaughter school (reason not stated), while in Class II, at the age of 12 (which suggests it is Joseph V Keen, the other Joseph Keen would have been nearly 17 by this time).

December 25 (Xmas Day) 1883, at the Parish Church in the Parish of Badsey, Worcester, Entry No 157: Joseph Keen (23, Bachelor, Gardener of Lower Slaughter), Father Valentine Keen, Gamekeeper (Decd) to Mary Anne (sic) Walker (Age 23, Spinster, Domestic Servant of Badsey), Father John Walker, Labourer. In the presence of George Geden and Sarah Elizabeth Geden (Sarah was sister of Mary Ann, George was her husband) Note: Joseph recorded his grandfather as his father. This may indicate that his mother had died before his marriage. Valentine was also not officially a gamekeeper (he does not appear in the Gamekeeper records at Gloucester Record Office). What is Joseph's connection with Badsey? How did he and Polly meet? Its possible there are Keen family members there.

Lucy Mapley Boarder Mar 27 Maidstone Kent
Granpy Keen referred to Aunt Lucy. James Thomas Mapley married Lucy Chittenden in Maidstone District, Kent in Dec 1886.
The family must have moved around a bit in the preceding few years as the 3 children were all born at different places in the locality.
1894: Edward and Amelia both left Lower Slaughter school on 19 Jan 1894, when they "left the neighbourhood", so assume this is when they moved to Hampshire. Cecil was christened in Freefolk in Jan 1896.
1896 - 1901: Gardener, Freefolk

Florence Beck 20 Berks Reading Boarder Paper Mill Hand
Florence Beck could be the niece of Mary Ann Keen, I already had a Florence Beck, born abt 1880 in Sulham, Berkshire. Bit of a coincidence?
Note that Ted and Florence were Paper Mill Hands, they would have been employed by Henri Portal's paper mill in Laverstoke. The Portal Estate built the 18 thatched cottages in Freefok, to house workers, but this was in 1938, so the Freefolk Cottages referenced in the 1901 census must have been elsewhere.
1901: Moved to Limerstone, IoW. At about this time, Joseph became gardener to the Revd Silver, Rector of Brighstone. Not sure if this was why he moved to the Island, or whether he found this job after he moved. Incidentally Edgar Silver appears to be in Portswood in 1901 census, aged 71.
[13Mar2003: Found entry for Revd Silver in Crockfords 1909, his name was actually Ernest Wollaston Silver (not Edgar). Became Rector of Brighstone in 1903, so the Keens were already on the Island by this time. Checking again in the 1881 census, Ernest W Silver was a boarder, aged 18, at Marlborough College, Wiltshire, and his birthplace was given as Isle of Wight. Ernest's qualifications: C.C.C Ox. B.A. (2nd cl. Lit. hum) 1885, M.A. 1888. Leeds Clergy Sch. 1885; C of St Paul, Haggerston, 1887-1895; Dioc Insp Win 1895-1902; C of Michelmersh 1902-03. FreeBMD shows Ernest Wollaston Silver born Dec Qtr 1862, Isle of Wight 2b 487. Edgar St George & Agnes Silver were born Isle of Wight 1861 & 1862 respectively] Died 28 Mar 1935 at Ryde of Lindisfarne, Totland Bay, aged 72. 1871 Edgar Silver was at Egypt House School Cowes, aged 10, birth place given as Cowes
1909: Moved house
Note: Joseph had a cousin, A Wragg, who wrote to him from Lower Slaughter in 1910. Emily Wragg, nee Johnson, inherited the shop previously owned by Joseph Johnson and later his wife Elizabeth (Emily was their daughter). A Wragg is most likely Emily's daughter Ada?

Sep 1928: Still lived at School House, Brighstone, when Revd Silver wrote to him from Gloucestershire, after Joseph had visited Silver, and some "frightful" event had occurred on the way back to the Island.
1948 (approx): Moved to Meadowbrook, following death of his son, Cecil.
1951: Died at Meadowbrook, Newport Road, Godshill (home of his son Albert), in his 91st year. Registered by Audrey Keen (daughter in law) on 18 April 1951. Death Certificate - IM 347118 (Entry No 346 in Register Book of Deaths)

BRIGHSTONE. Death of Mr J V Keen. the death of Mr Joseph V Keen occurred on Monday at the residence of his son at Godshill, at the age of 90. He was born in Gloucestershire and came to live here in 1903 [sic, actually in 1900]. He was well known as an expert horticulturist and was gardener to the rector (the late Rev E W Silver) for 33 years. He often judged at local horticultural shows, and, although he never competed, he frequently exhibited specimens of his own produce. For the last two years he had been living at Godshill. The funeral took place yesterday.
